Jim writes:

Happy Birthday William 36 miles
O for a frame of carbon, that would ascend
The highest hills of the South Downs,
With Surrey as their stage, Richmond Park their course
And Di2 to shift those gears!
Then should the Rude Mechanicals,
Assume the port of Giro; and at the counter,
Hungry like hounds, should NickB, Jim and Andy
Order flapjacks and coffee. But pardon, gentles all,
The flat unraised spirits that have dared
On this unworthy scaffold to bring forth
So great an object: can this cockpit hold
The vasty fields of Surrey? or may we cram
Within this wooden O the very lycra
That did affright the air at Esher?

Meanwhile, in the alternative ride, Richard and Robin cycled National Route 4 from Kingston to Staines, 17.5 miles in a ponderous two hours: along the towpath to Weybridge, then dog-legging back to Chertsey to get over the bridge. Big breakfast in Cafe One – we deserved it after all that effort. This was a training ride for our trip to the West Country along Route 4 next weekend, but towpath travel takes so long we’re going to have to take some short cuts.
